As some countries don’t hallmark their gold, how to tell if something is gold or gold plated?
In home conditions, it’s a bit troublesome to tell whether jewelry is gold or gold plated.
That’s because to tell this you need to run a test on a cross section sample of your jewelry or whatever it is you are trying to test. This is not desirable since it potentially may permanently damage your jewelry.
If you can get a hold of a cross section of your jewelry with and assemble it back together then do the following:
♥ Throw this sample into the solution of hydrochloric acid (50% v/v
♥ If your jewelry is a pure gold throughout, then it will stay intact
♥ If your jewelry is gold-plated, then the inside of the jewelry will dissolve
*Be careful not to allow hydrochloric acid to come in contact with your skin*
The other option, a more practical one, is to give your jewelry to an expert. They should be able to tell that without damaging your precious possession.
Whatever you do, wishing you the outcome you want!
